Bernadette, her sis Toinette, and a friend, Jeanne Abadie go out to find wood the grotto. The mother is disturbed and doubtful of Bernadettes vision, and forbids her to go stomach to the grotto again. The father feels the same, but also feels that the family, which is already experiencing a conviction of hardship, would be vulnerable to ridicule if Bernadettes story were to get out.
